Course Objective

This is a survey of piano solo repertoire, centering on music being created in Paris, France, during the years 1900-1920.  Other music of the time will also be examined.

Feb. 15: French Songs and Solos [Guest Lecturer Dr. Campbell]

Feb. 22 Maurice Ravel

Feb. 29: Enrique Granados, Isaac Albeniz, Manuel DeFalla

Mar. 7: Examination on French and Spanish Composers at regular class time (12:40-2:30PM)

A schedule of assignments and a detailed description of presentations will be announced as needed, and as soon as possible.

 

Grading Criteria/Policy/Exam Schedule

Attendance (at classes and recommended events) counts for 40 percent of the final grade. (If you are absent without a good reason you are not given a good grade. "Recommended events" may include Andrew Campbell's recital January 19 at 7:30 pm in Katzin, Tarina Kim's Bartok recital Sunday, February 17 at 5:00 pm in Katzin, the Pagano Studio Debussy Prelude recital March 5 at 7:30 pm in Katzin, the Cosand Studio Recital at Steinway of Phoenix at 3:00 pm on Apr. 13, and any solo recital given by any student of this class, including that of Charles Szczepanek on Sunday, Feb. 3 at 7:30 pm in Katzin.)

The midterm examination (March 7) will count for 20 percent of the final grade.

The presentation in class will count for 20 percent of the final grade.

The final examination (May 2) will count for 20 percent of the final grade.

Extra credit may be allowed for extra projects.
